Melbourne Piano Lessons - grade 8 - amusa -licentiate

for Best sound QUALITY

The best sound quality for online piano lessons for everyone is by recordings. This way we can still work together on tone quality, tone production and contrasted dynamics – all are super important.

If lesson is done live over Zoom (with student and me playing in real time), the tone quality of the piano is distorted. It’s got worse with the current surge in online and Zoom activity. And piano is most difficult instrument to transmit live because of its wide frequency range.

The lesson system via recordings is a strong, clear system of learning. This way student can clearly hear dynamics, rhythms and phrasing and watch me demonstrate technique from a clear camera angle.  It maintains a high standard of teaching and learning.

PART ONE: HOW will lessonS WORK?

Students record  their playing and upload the video to YouTube as an “Unlisted” video ( so only student & Robin can see it).  Robin records lesson and uploads to YouTube in reply.

1. Student's video:

Student records what he/she has  practised over the week  - can be in several separate videos or one long one.

how to record the video

  •   For the scales and exercises part please say what you’re going to play e.g.” G melodic minor” or “d major arpeggio first inversion” - say scale/arpeggio name.
  • For pieces please say name of piece and hold music up to camera so I can see the score to identify it. Thanks
  •   Please position smartphone or laptop so we can see both the student (at least part of) and their hands on keyboard.

TIPS FOR RECORDING:

Make sure the microphone is free of obstruction (e.g. smartphone not sitting on the microphone.)

Please use the best quality microphone you have e.g. recent smartphone should be OK . A laptop or desktop is even better.

how to send your videos to robin

  1.   Upload video to YouTube – choose “Unlisted” option (not private or public)
  2. Send YouTube links to me via email or text.

2. how to listen to lessons from robin

 1. The lesson recordings are designed to be played  just as if you are in a regular piano lesson. I’ll give clear directions - saying when to pause the recording and try out what I’ve just demonstrated (just like in a regular in person lesson). I’ll also say what to write in your notebook.

I’ll upload lesson to YouTube and send you the YouTube link.

PART TWO: Scheduling of lesson

To keep a regular schedule at home, the student can record during their regular lesson time and I'll send a lesson in reply the next day.

Or student can record beforehand and I’ll record a lesson in the regular lesson time.

I'll be arranging lesson times as usual - often via text.

PART THREE: Invoices

In these unusual times, to be fair to everyone, if technical issues or family situation prevent the lesson recording from going ahead, don’t worry, lesson will be made up/rescheduled.

part four: any questions?

Please don't hesitate to call me with any issues. Don't worry. We can sort it out.
